About Oni Bushi

The kanabō is the iron-studded war club of Heian and Sengoku-period oni legend — the weapon of Shuten-dōji, the great oni of Mount Ōe whose head was cut off by Minamoto no Yorimitsu in the 10th century, and the iconic weapon of every oni-bushi (鬼武士) painted on the byōbu screens of the period. The phrase “oni ni kanabō” — “an oni with a kanabō” — is the Japanese idiom for invincible overkill. This sculpt captures exactly that moment: the demon is already armed beyond reason, and now he is also moving fast. The hannya mask he wears (a Noh theatre mask of a woman turned demon by jealousy, codified by the maskmaker Hannya-bō) hides his original face entirely.

Material and finish

32 mm heroic base, approx. 35–45 mm tall. Printed at 0.04 mm layer height in UV-cured photopolymer resin (grey). Unpainted and unprimed; minor support cleanup may be needed.
