About the Kitsune Nine-Tailed Fox

The kitsune (狐) is the most beloved yokai in Japanese folklore — the fox spirit that gains a new tail every hundred years and reaches full power at nine. One of the best-known kitsune tales is the Kuzunoha legend, in which a fox-mother takes human form to marry the warrior Abe no Yasuna and gives birth to the onmyōji Abe no Seimei. Foxes serve at the shrines of Inari Ōkami, the kami of rice and prosperity, where their stone statues guard every torii gate. The kitsunebi (狐火, foxfire) hovering at her lantern is the ghost-light foxes are said to carry — seen at night across rice paddies, a folk explanation for the will-o'-the-wisp. Whether she is a benevolent zenko (good fox) or a yako (field fox, a trickster) depends entirely on whose offering she chose to accept.

Material and finish

32 mm heroic base, approx. 38–48 mm tall including the tail-flare. Printed at 0.04 mm layer height in UV-cured photopolymer resin (grey). Unpainted, ready for priming.
