About Onmyoji

Onmyōdō (陰陽道, “the way of yin and yang”) was the formal Japanese magic system codified at the Heian court in the 8th–9th centuries. Its most famous practitioner, Abe no Seimei (921–1005), is the single most-depicted wizard in Japanese folklore, and his binding circles still appear on shrine walls today. The mitsu-tomoe (三つ巴, three-comma swirl) on each of the orbiting wards is the sigil of the Hachiman cult and a staple of onmyōji sealing rites; in folklore it represents the binding of three forces — heaven, earth and water — into one rotation. This sculpt depicts the inversion: an oni who has stolen the onmyōji's craft. The naginata-staff he carries is not just a weapon but a yorishiro, a vessel into which a kami can be summoned. Multiple arms, because no single body should be able to hold this much yin and yang at once.

Material and finish

32 mm heroic base, approx. 50–60 mm tall including the floating ward halo. Printed at 0.04 mm layer height in UV-cured photopolymer resin (grey). Unpainted. The ward halo is a separate connector piece, and minor support cleanup may be needed.
