About the Two-Faced Oni

The two-faced oni belongs to the Fūjin–Raijin pairing tradition — the wind and thunder demons painted as a duo on the byōbu screens of the Edo-period master Tawaraya Sōtatsu and reproduced ever since. In Buddhist iconography the pair were the niō, the twin gate-guardians of temples; in folk tradition they merged into the doubled-face oni who could see two directions at once and could not be ambushed. The drum-belly with the mitsu-tomoe sigil is direct Raijin iconography — Raijin carries the thunder drums, and any oni who displays the swirl is claiming kinship with the storm god. The yari (槍, a straight spear) was the standard polearm of Sengoku-period ashigaru infantry and oni warbands alike. A reach-attack heavy with a lot of presence on the table.

Material and finish

Available on a 32 mm base (approx. 45–55 mm tall including the spear) or a 50 mm base (approx. 60–75 mm tall). Printed at 0.04 mm layer height in UV-cured photopolymer resin (grey). Unpainted; the spear and the shoulder-face may need light support cleanup.

A polearm yokai for D&D Eastern campaigns, a heavy-infantry oni for Bushido or Test of Honour, a flanker for OPR Grimdark Future Asian-fantasy, or a Raijin-aspect figure for any thunderstorm-flavoured encounter.
